IXD101 ( 30249 ) - Interaction Design Fundamentals. 2022-23

This week we looked at an introduction to human-centred design.

What is human-centred design?

Human-centred design (HCD) is a design approach that focuses on the needs, wants, and limitations of the end users of a product or service. It involves actively involving users in the design process, gathering and analysing user data, and iteratively testing and refining the design to ensure that it meets the needs of the users.

The goal of HCD is to create products, services, and systems that are user-friendly, easy to use, and effective at meeting the needs of the people who will use them. HCD is often used in the design of digital products, such as websites and software applications, but it can also be applied to the design of physical products, services, and environments.

HCD involves a number of different methods and techniques, such as user research, prototyping, usability testing, and iterative design. It is often used in conjunction with other design approaches, such as design thinking and agile development.

By considering the needs and perspectives of the end users throughout the design process, HCD can help to create products and services that are more effective, efficient, and satisfying to use.

Focus on people → Find the right problem → think of everything as a system → Validate decisions.

“All design should be human centred, it’s as simple as that. And I mean human-centred, not ‘user centred’ or ‘user-friendly’, because users are human beings after all.” David Townson, Design Council

User Interface Design

User interface (UI) design is the process of designing the visual elements of a digital product, such as a website or software application, with the goal of making it easy and intuitive for users to interact with. UI design involves creating user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity mock-ups to visually communicate how a product will work and how users will interact with it.

Effective UI design requires a deep understanding of the users of the product, as well as an understanding of human-computer interaction and usability principles. Some key considerations in UI design include:

By considering these and other factors, designers can create user interfaces that are intuitive, efficient, and enjoyable to use.
